Before we officially say goodbye to summer, there’s still time for one more adventure—or maybe two. From mountain towns and island escapes to rugged coastlines and scenic drives, we’re lucky to have so many incredible destinations just a few hours from home.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend by the water, a new trail to explore, or simply an excuse to pack up the car and get out of town, Western Washington has plenty to offer. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite weekend getaways to inspire your next summer escape—and help you make the most of these last long days of the season.
🌲San Juan Islands
Best For: Relaxing, kayaking, and adventure
Slow down and enjoy island time. Head to Friday Harbor for great restaurants and shops, spend an afternoon on the water, or simply find a quiet spot to watch the sunset.
Don’t miss: Lime Kiln Point, a whale watching excursion, and exploring the island.
🌲Leavenworth
Best For: Mountains, food, and a fun getaway
There’s a reason Leavenworth is such a classic Washington getaway. It’s an easy drive over the mountains, but once you’re there, it feels like a real change of scenery. Spend the day hiking or floating the river, wander Front Street with a cold drink or ice cream, then settle in for a great dinner.
Don’t miss: A hike along the Icicle River, exploring Front Street, and grabbing a drink at one of the local breweries or cideries.
🌲Mount Rainier
Best For: Hiking and iconic PNW scenery
Few things feel more quintessentially Washington than spending a summer day beneath Mount Rainier. Paradise offers incredible alpine scenery, wildflowers, waterfalls, and plenty of hiking options.
Don’t miss: The Paradise area and a sunset drive through the park.
🌲Whidbey Island
Best For: Coastal towns and an easy escape
Whidbey is close enough for a spontaneous weekend but feels worlds away. Explore Langley and Coupeville, wander through Ebey's Landing, and make your way to Deception Pass.
Don’t miss: A ferry ride from Mukilteo, Fort Casey, and sunset near the water.
🌲Bellingham and Chuckanut Drive
Best For: Food, drinks and the outdoors
Bellingham makes a great home base for a weekend of exploring. Grab coffee in Fairhaven, walk along the waterfront, then take the scenic Chuckanut Drive toward Larrabee State Park.
Don’t miss: Fairhaven, Chuckanut Drive, and a meal featuring local seafood.
🌲Cle Elum & Suncadia
Best For: Cozy cabins and a little R&R
Head east over Snoqualmie Pass for mountain air, riverside walks, great restaurants, and plenty of opportunities to relax. This is a particularly good option when you want nature without planning an entire weekend around hiking.
Don’t miss: Exploring Roslyn, a leisurely river walk, and an evening around the fire.
🏞️ One more reason to get out there
One of the best parts of living in Washington State is how much variety we are surrounded by. Mountains, islands, forests, farms, and the Pacific Northwest coast are all right here waiting to be explored.
